Hunting for Henry -- A Case Study Using Collaterals

presented by Teresa S. McMillin, CG

Are you dealing with an ancestor who seems to have been hatched?  Who landed in the middle of the United States with no obvious way of getting here?  If so, this is the program may help you unravel the mystery.

Henry Steren was a German immigrant who lived in Quincy, Illinois.  Resources available about him only indicate that he was from the Province of Hanover in Germany.  This lecture will walk through the process of identifying his town of origin and his parents.  Complicating factors in this case are:

  • Very few records exist for Henry, none of which explain his origins and they all conflict with respect to his age.
  • A surname that is easily confused with the common surname Stern.
  • Multiple people with identical names.

By carefully researching each of his associates and correlating all available evidence, the Genealogical Proof Standard is used to reveal the origins of Henry.

Teresa Steinkamp McMillin is a certified professional genealogist who specializes in German-American and Midwest research, as well as reading German script.  She has been interested in genealogy since she was a child and has been actively researching her German ancestry for the past twelve years, as well as her husband's Chicago Irish.  She has attended the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy and has taken college-level German courses.

She was the 2007 recipient of the National Genealogical Society's Home Study Course, which she has completed and for which she is now a grader.  Teresa is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the National Genealogical Society, as well as many local genealogical societies.  She is the co-president for the Northwest Suburban Council of Genealogists.
